Check the bulbs. They go out one at a time, but you don't know til they don't work at all.
Next would be the switch (down by the brake pedal).

If you have a multimeter, you can check for voltage in the lamp socket directly, and at teh switch. After that, it's a matter of tracing the wires. If it's just the bulbs, I'd strongly reccomend LED's as replacements. They use a LOT less power to operate, and they last about forever. Most are tested out to over 10,000 hours of continuous use. They're more expensive, but since chances are you'll never have to replace them again, they pretty much pay for themselves.

Also, make sure the grounds are good. A dirty socket or broken ground wire can cause the lights to not work also.

Good luck, and keep us informed!

Also, the brake lights are NOT the parking/driving lights. You have 2 different filaments in the same bulb. One energizes for the parking lights, the other when you step on the brake. Just because the bulb lights up when you turn the headlights on means nothing. It's entirely possible to fail the brake filament while the other is perfectly good. Make sure your bulbs are actually good for the brake filament, not just the parking light filament.
