Brake light switch question

This last weekend I spent some time wiring up my taillights. Everything works as it should except for brake lights. I've traced it back to the brake pressure switch but I have a question regarding the placement of it and how it works.
Isnt there supposed to be something that depresses the switch to activate the lights? Mine is just sitting on the firewall with nothing touching it, not the brake pedal, not the parking brake, nothing.
Mind you when I press it by hand it does not work and I've put a voltmeter to it to confirm.
My truck is an 86 deluxe pickup, automatic with the 22re.
Any help would be appreciated.

Bossman looking at me funny: "Why you always running to your truck and taking pictures??? Go work! "
