lots of white smoke, lots of coolant in cylinder 4. ripped the head off and the gasket did look bad. resurfaced head new gaskets and still smoking!

this has to be a block prob? runs great, better than ever but smokes like crazy.

any insight would be great

thinking of taking the long block to the machinist and rebuilding, but maybe im missing something

 

Sounds like a cracked head to me. Try pressure testing your cooling system. Pull the plugs before you try to start it afterwards. In case it pushes water in to the cylinder

 

Did you pull the timing cover?
Water in oil?
Oil in water?
Timing chain could have worn a hole into the cover

 

good point did not pull chain cover, engine was rebuilt 60k ago figure thats all good but i may want to do that. not much if any water in oil when i drained it, coolant looked pretty good too.

right now smoking- all plugs are dry and slightly white(they are new), oil in dip stick looks great, coolant in rad is clean. maybe i am steaming all the water out that is still in the exhaust? ran for 20 mins no highway. my friend told me to rod it for a bit seeings how its running good, see if white smoke subsides

 

Had the same thing happen with mine. Tracked it down to the timing cover, the chain had just barely worn a slice through the cover so it only leaked under pressure.

Also, the cover costs over $100, so I found a good local welder who patched it up for $25.

i had the same problem. but i dont see how the coolant itself would get into the cylinder if this were the case here. also he said no mixing of oil and coolant and a chain cover leak would pee coolant into your oil pan mimicking a head gasket failure. did you magnaflux the head when it was off? some cold/hot dry/wet compression tests might help to pinpoint or rule out problems, and a leakdown test wouldnt hurt either

 

bam! hot rodded it around, by about 3 miles exhaust cleared right up. i think there was water in my muffler and just crap in the cylinders. when i first blew the gasket i was on a hill about 12 miles up, riding the compression the whole way down put more water in the cylinder and exhaust than normal (i think).

no i thought about that and because the oil was not contaminated i didnt think it was the timing cover. however all this talk and now that its running good i think i am going to do the timing chain. thanks
