I would check the timming cover first. Pull the valve cover and look into the timming chain area, if the guides are broke Id lay money on a hole in the cover. replacing the timming set is way easier than a headgasket. your milage may very.

Best way of going about replacing the HG? Taking the head off

Timing chain easier than HG? No way! They're both simple, but removing the head you dont have to break the crankshaft bolt loose!

But yes, check the timing chain. The HG is actually a regular service part. Like, when you're supposed to replace the t-chain every 100K-150K miles, you should replace the head gasket.

Aye Yoder, Ok first thing you need is a Factory service Manual, FSM.
Then you could use the search feature and find others that have done it before. I was in your shoes not long ago. The FSM and searching for info got me through it. I had to remove my head because of a broken and stuck spark plug in cyl. 4. Come to find out the head was cracked so the spark plug was a blessing in disquise. PS there was a bit O milk shake on the oil filler cap before the spark plug break
