blew motor today, opinions on options
94 pickup 22re 135k 5spd 4x4. pretty sure the motor went today. just driving at about 50 and a big bang and then a lot of loud knocking. it still runs, but doesnt sound too great. last week the truck was serviced and the timing chain and guides and gears, oil pump, and a few other things were done to it. the timing gear was missing teeth and it wasnt running great. it ran awesome up until today. tons of power and really quiet.
so my questions are...
should i keep this motor and have it rebuilt?
buy a used motor and swap it in?
buy a crate motor and put that in?
i wouldnt be doing any of the work, but a friend is awesome with these motors and would do it a lot cheaper than a shop. just trying to weigh my options on what is going to work out better for me in the long run. any ideas and/or reccomendations?
thanks a ton guys, you are awesome

i left for work about a month ago in mine when it started knocking really bad, i had no way to get it home and drove it home knocking about 2 miles. pulled the pan and all the main bearings on the cap side had scarred. i could not catch my finger nail on the crank anywhere so i replaced all the bearings including rod bearings and its been running great ever since.

my first yota 20r went 200k pullin 33's and i beat on it pretty hard.
the second yota pu, 22re, i've had went 263k and ran great when i pulled it.
it is out of the ordinary for these motors not to go a lot longer.
i know stuff happens to any engine but a lot of times they have "help".

Depends on whats wrong with it. Is there a hole in the side of the block? Is the engine oil milky looking? Are the valves bent? What does the timing set look like? How is the oil pressure? etc.. If it's salvageable I might be inclined to do a rebuild if not then I'd rebuild a salvaged one.

well the guy who serviced it is the guy who would be rebuilding it. hes a 100% yota guy and he builds these all the time and is kinda like all of you guys on here. just really smart with them and can fix them with his eyes closed. i havent had a chance to get in touch with him yet, but i will be in the next couple days for sure. kinda wierd that it happened right after he worked on it, but im not going to assume anything yet. it always had a little wrist pin slap at higher rpms, so im thinking it finally let loose. my 92 i had before this went for over 300k no problems. just seeing what you guys are thinking on for a fix. which way to go and which way will i be better off.

I wonder if they dumped coolant into the oil pan when pulling the timing chain cover then forgot to flush it. I did this myself and was lucky to catch my error.
Not one of my brighter moments.

I had white foam in the oil cap the day after I idled it for 10 minutes. Luckilly, the only thing I did after the chain install was the 10 minute idle.
I would have hated to find out during my 100 mile trip to my work.
