Bl done, shifter problems

Okay so after 3 days of workin in the damn rain we finished my 3" body lift.
We got the shifters cut and spacers welded in, we ran into our first shifter problem. The shifter hit the t-case shifter when going into reverse.
Okay so we heat it up and bend it a little to the left and up.
Okay so now it goes into all the gears but now it seems like its binding on the boots in reverse.
It wont go fully into the gear so Im scared it will pop out.
Can I just notch the boot plate and go from there or am I just going to have to live with it?

You can dogleg the shifter or extend or even a short shift kit may help.

Check out 4Crawler (http://www.4crawler.com/), especially his body lift section for parts and tips on getting your shifter to work correctly.

I believe Marlin also makes short throw shift kits as well.

Also, Marlin (maybe TG) sell a stiffer spring for the transfer case lever. Makes the ball really bite into the shift rail detent. Night and day difference as far as gear position engagement.

Maybe a similiar spring upgrade would give your tranny more bite against a tight boot.

Just throwing out some ideas.

I would really like a marlin shortthrow but I would have to send my shifter out and that would leave my truck undriveable for some time (wait untill my next project)

I think im just going to have to take the boots off and see where exactly its hitting.

Im going to try taking out one set of boots to see if that helps at all.

Here's what I did to solve that same problem(3" BL), without bending or extending the shifters.

That's in reverse and is barely touching the t-case boot. I've never had it come out of any gear except first, on an extremely rough trail.

No problem. If it ain't too ugly lookin' for ya. It's fine by me, but I call my truck "a beater".

My truck is an sr5 so I have the nice "leather type" cover that goes over that stuff.

I was able to invert the bottom boot but the top one would not budge.
Did you cut it seperate from the t-case boot and just flip it over?

Mine popped out of 2,4,and R for like 8 years until I had a shop swap out a tranny for me. They thought the problem was something they did so they worked on it and finally notched out the shifter plate (whatever that is) and got it to fully engage the gears. Now it works like a charm and I have both boots on and screwed down.

I did run like above for a year or so and got tired of how it looked and sounded so I out it all back on.

Yeah, except I cut it out and tossed it. The t-case shifter boots, bottom & top, are untouched, and the transmission shifter only has the bottom. It's pushed down so it looks inverted because it just works better that way for me.

hmm....
inverting the first inner boot helped a little but the shifter is really getting hung up on the top one. I wonder if I could just flip that one over and be done with it..

Is it the plate that holds the boots down?

I have looked at it and it dosnt seem to be hitting that, it just seems to be getting hung up on the boot but only for reverse. 2nd is perfect, 4th I can Kinda feel it hitting the boot, and reverse is the worst
I guess I could try notching the plate to see if that will help any.

thanks

Oh and here is pictures if anyone is interested.
they where taken in the rain, sorry.
