I bit the bullet having my 86 4x4 painted. Shop owner called me today to bring gas cause he cant move it around. (its a holiday so no grunts). I told him theres gas, he replied the gauge reads E, I replied ya it does that but tanks full. So I drove over there and seems fuel pumps shot and I guess the sending unit too. Anyway bed is OFF so the time is now. Hes o.k. with me there for a day to do the swap out. Sure I can go to napa but I thought Id jump on here see if theres a place to go for a full fuel set up 1986 Toyota turbo 4x4. Ill include some pics from last week. Like I said bed is on the dolly at this pointI took this when we swapped my rims for rollers, those are the doors to the right. a bit of the fender to the left, windshield is out now. no rust under it!
Best place would be the dealer, or a dealer supply. They have the OEM parts, if you were to buy from a box store, Id see if they offer a denso unit (since Im only guessing thats who makes the original part). Otherwise if you go to napa or another box store, Id try to get the best quality pump if you have the money, or at least go middle of the road, I cringe at the thought of chinese cheapo junk on my truck, they work, but for how long, could be two weeks could be five, lol.
Its probably far easier on the pickups than the 4Runners, but IMHO - deal with the parking brake cable with the bed off...
Is there an issue I should look at? A common problem I could update?
I tracked down "Toyota" parts for the fuel pump etc.. I didnt know OEM was that out of control. I rememer buying a HG kit for twice as much a few years back but ouch 559.00 for fuel pump only. So question is Bosch or Denzo?

The cable is bolted to the frame rails, along side the tank
Its nigh on impossible to remove the cable w/o dropping the tank - although with the bed off, its probably readily accessible
Any signs of "fray-ing" or cable hang up or just plain age etc - and you can afford it - yank the cable.
