Automatic Transmission problems

Ok, this is a little off topic, but it IS Toyota... My new daily driver is a 90 Camry with the A140L automatic. I think some gears in the differential section of the transaxle are shot. If its in park you can rotate the front wheels (car on jack stands) rather freely until you feel and hear some grinding noise, this is with the transmission IN park! Now putting it in gear you hear the most gawd awefull grinding noise like gears are just rolling around in there... So what I am getting at, has anyone ever opened up the diff section of an Asin A140 or similar transaxle? Is it even worth messing with? I can get a used unit for $400.

Thanks,
