Do the automatic transmission parking brakes on our trucks ever fail? The reason I ask is because my brake cable is getting a little stretched and I park on a 3" incline. I was wondering if I can get away with just using the transmission brake instead of the emergency brake. I'm trying to avoid more maintenance. Is the e brake safer but more more maintenance is required, and is the transmission brake less safe but less maintenance?

 

Take up the slack in the cable at the adjustment at the intermediate lever in front of the fuel tank..

Use of the emergency brake keeps your rear brakes adjusted .

It can be a pain adjusting the brakes every few weeks depending how much you drive.

There is no such thing as an 'automatic transmission parking brake'

When your auto tranny is selected to 'PARK' there is a mechanical pawl that renders the internal gears immobile and so, locks the drive line.

Unless your tranny is seriously out of adjustment, or it has been abused by repeatedly shoving it into PARK while the truck is moving, the PARK position should hold your truck.

I'm a belt and suspenders kind of guy, so I set the emergency brake as well. It keeps the rear service brakes adjusted, as has already been said.

Brake maintainance is not to be neglected. Address any deficiency in any brake systems immediately. The life you save might be mine.
