Well my 3.0 won't fast idle when cold but it does start right up if given a little throttle, for about 10 seconds then idles at about 300 to 350 rpm and as it warms it works its way up to about 750. Other than that it runs like a top. It has about 280k on the truck and about 190k on the engine.

the only time in 20 years that mine didn't start was (1) a dead battery, and (2) one time at -40 when i didn't plug it in. other than that, zoom!, even after sitting for up to 9 months (battery disconnected) when i was out of town.

I second ak_md1122. My 3vze starts like a champ. Only issues, like him, were cold-related (when my starter froze). Now that I live in a very cold area, I had the OEM Toyota cold weather starter installed (apparently only available in colder climates but I bet you could order it).

some things you should try:
-get an odyssey battery (shameless plug. I love mine. My optima died fast).
-do the big3 upgrade, absolutely. (this made a huge difference for me).

good luck!

Definition: the "Big Three" upgrade means improving the current capacity of three cables: 1) alternator positive to battery positive, 2) battery negative to chassis, and 3) engine ground to chassis. Some people replace the factory wiring; others add additional cables to the factory wiring. This instruction is to add cables to existing OEM wiring.

1993 Pickup with 323,000km (201,875miles) 1992 Pickup with about 45,000miles (72,000km) both vehicles start with no problems, 1992 used to have a problem starting when warm to hot but problem has corrected itself (suspected leaking cold injector possible fixed with injection cleaner). However both vehicles have an issue at temperatures below -36C (-32.8F) vehicles not plugged in. Both vehicle are slow to start but they always started and then stalled, repeated starting results in flooding. I suspect that the VAFM door is sticking as vehicle start and then stall within 5 seconds also runs rough. I found that if I started vehicle normally no throttle standard EFI starting method but that once it starts to work gas peddle until RPM responds to gas peddle input then both vehicles run at high idle with no problems. Anyone else note this problem at very cold temperture. Manage to start 1993 pickup at -40C not plugged and sitting for 3 days.

Yeah mine actually did that for a while too...just corrected the issue altogether, started great every time no matter what temp. Then it started again and is still here. Been too cold to do any diagnostics, I can just see those 19 year old plastic clips breaking when I pull the connectors off the sensors in 30 degree weather.

Gonna ohm out the temp sensor and the CSI temp switch and see what I get, until it warms up a bit, I deal with it.

Mine starts usually on the first turn of the key! It has a fast idle during cold weather, but otherwise I have no real complaints

94toyota I never released that it got down to the -30 to -40F in California. 1998 GMC/Chev does not start at -40C/F unless it is plugged in, good to about -36C after that it has to be plugged in. Maybe my Toy is due for a good injector cleaning but please explain what fuel pump has to do with very cold weather starting, truck runs fine otherwise. Hopefully you are replying to someone else's post.

For those that live in warm southern places when do you get to test your vehicle at cold temperatures. A blowing wind does affect how a vehicle starts in cold weather. Living in Canada I have seen the affect that a 50km/hr (31mph) wind has in starting a vehicle when the temperature is below -30C or F, come visit us when it is cold but make sure that your vehicle has heavy duty battery. My toys have 800CCA batteries not those wimpy 400 - 500CCA batteries, I run 800 - 1000CCA with 120minute reserve in my 98 Chev.

Have a Great Day
