Alternator troubleshooting help

I need some help. My 94 22re is not charging and I can not figure out why. It started when I put all new belts on. Before then it worked great. the meter in the dash was always pretty far to the right. After putting the new belts on (yes i made sure they where tight) the meter just slowly started to drop after driving it. I used a multimeter and only got 9v at the battery.

1. removing the neg terminal from the battery kills the truck
2. testing the top connector of the alt gives me nothing when the truck is running.
3. both white wires on the back of the alt have 9v from the battery going to them red has nothing
4. check all fuses under the hood and inside.
5. no battery light.
6. autozone said the alt checked out fine and showed me where it said it was putting out 14 volts.

what else is there to check. i'm about to just go buy another alt anyways.

nevermind. after i put everything back together i noticed my tach was twitching and it would stop when i held the engine fuse back. the volt meter would go back up to where it was also. stuck a pen in behind the contact to push it out and everything is working great now.
