alternator Q's

My alternator was acting up so i tore it out which was fun in itself and took it to a local place to get rebuilt. I got it back a day later looking like new and working again. I put it in and for some reason it only shows like 12.3v at idle of about 750rpm. Now if i get it idling up around 1100 it will jump to 13.8v I tried taking the bat terminal off when it's idling and it stalled out. Now if i idle it up and remove the terminal it stays running. I'm confused as to weather it's working or not. I'm not getting and dummy lights any more and i've been driving it for 2 days w/ac on without any problems. I'm thinking maybe the battery is cooked after me running it for 3 days with the alternator acting up before i had it rebuilt?
