I just got done rebuilding my 22RE. Bored .30 over, rv cam, new crank and bearings, kb pistons, new timing chain, and water pump. everything is together and on the engine stand and i need to adjust the valves since i bought a new cam. Could anyone explain to me how to do this correctly?

 

set the engine to tdc. When i talked to ted from engnbldr he said to set the valves on the rv cam to .007 intake and .009 exhaust. My motor wasn't bored over at all but i wouldn't think that would make a difference. From tdc set the first two intake valves then the first and third exhaust valves accordingly when facing the front of the motor. you set the valves by loosening the 12mm. lock nut and adjust the gap by turning the screw at the top of the rocker. Check the gap by sliding the appropriate feeler gauge between the tappet and the top of the spring. Once set rotate the crank 360 deg. Then set the third and fourth intake and the second and fourth exhaust valves accordingly. Remember set the intake valves to .007 and the exhaust valves to .009. This is according to ted from engblr. for the rv 268 cam. The fsm requires for a stock cam, to be set at .008 intake and .012 exhaust. The fsm also requires the motor to be hot when setting the valve lash. Setting the valve lash is easy and can be done within minimal tools. All you should need is a good set of feeler gauges 12mm. wrench and flat head screwdriver. Set them close before you install the motor they should have slight drag when setting them, and after you install the motor get it to running temp to properly set the valve lash. If you have any questions about your specific valve settings for you cam call ted at engnbldr he is realy helpful and a nice guy. Good luck and if you're unsure call ted he can line you out with the proper specs for your cam.

Basically set the motor tdc. Do intake exhaust for cyl 1, intake on cyl 2, and exhaust on cyl 3.

Turn the crank shaft 1 revolution. Then exhaust on cyl 2, intake cyl 3, intake and exhaust on 4.

The stock clearance specs are intake .008 and exhaust .012. Might be different for the rv cam tho, I don't know. Look thru the cams paperwork to see what it says.
