Access to the speed sensor on a 93 truck?

My speedometer and odometer finally quit on my 93 manual tans truck. I've been told its a bad speed sensor in the transmission. How do I access it?

Should be at the back of the transfer case if you have 4WD.

Yeah, just where Mt goat said.

Hey let me know if you replace the speed sensor and it works. Mine's not worked for a while, then worked for a month, now it's back out again. I don't know if it's the sensor or the wire or the cluster.

Post your conclusion!

OK, found it. I check with the Toyota parts folks and it will cost me $220 to replace it tosee it that's the problem. Any other ways to see if it has malfunctioned? Any testing I can do on it? It's quite easy to access and remove.

Is it mechanical or electrical? (Does it have a cable or 3 wires)

Don't go to the dealer, you're getting robbed. Look on the net or ebay.

found one on ebay that matched the dealer part number I was given for $45. Are aftermarket parts for this reliable? Does anyone have ideas?

There may be a test in the FSM for it then.

I took mine all apart and the plastic gear and everything looks perfect, but still doesn't work. I'm hoping the gear in the tranny isn't bad? Is that a possibility?

most likely it's electrical. my 94 runner had this happen and was stupid (noob mistake) and took it to the dealer...oh i mean stealer. definitely got robbed.

a little detail about why the sensor fails. the sensor is a plastic gear in the rear of the tranny. the plastic just wears out after time and slips.
