AC recharge!

i went to recharge my AC today. I started the truck, turned the AC on high, and connected the guage thing to the fitting. There were two black caps, one had an H and one had a L and i hooked it up to the L one. It registered 100. am i doing something wrong, should i let the AC run on high longer, or somethin or is my AC just screwed and i shouldnt worry about it.
