Hey folks I really need some help here? I have a 93 4Runner with the 3.0 V6which was running fine. On the way back home from town I noticed a slight loss of power and drop of 100 rpm at idle. The check engine light also came on. I got home parked it and read the Haynes Manual which suggested cleaning the air flow meter. I removed the meter, looked inmside and saw nothing to clean. It was like new, except for a small plastic protrusion.

I sprayed the appropriate cleaner on it anyway and replaced it. Next morning the engine started right up, ran a few seconds then died. I replaced the fuel filter, no change. If you can help me out, please do. I am mechanically inclined but troubleshooting is not my strength and I readily admit it!

 

check and make sure you didn't pull the bottom fork of the intake hose coming from below the air filter off (not the one to the air filter, but the smaller diameter one below it). You might need a flashlight to be able to see well. I had the same problem last weekend.

I've pretty much been lurking on this site because back in November I bought a '90 4runner with the 3.0 motor. Despite what most of you think of that motor I went ahead and rebuilt it. I got it started today for the first time and it sounds great. I put the jumper wire in the diagnostic connection and checked the timing. When I got the timing mark right at 10 BTDC the motor would suddenly drop RPM's and die. Right now it won't run without giving it some pedal or advance the timing which has it idling way too high. I've checked over the vacuum lines and haven't found any disconnected or obviously bad. The only lines I know for certain may have some slight leakage are the two that feed the intake snorkel. The rubber lines clamp onto large rigid lines that stick out like they are pointed towards the radiator cap, roughly. It's kind of strange though, the motor would be running smooth then just drop off RPM's and die.
Any suggestions, tips, guesses would be welcome.

Found my problem in the TSP. It needed to be adjusted. I also had a problem with the idle adjustment. It was closed. Backed it out a bit and got the idle set.
