93 4runner rear window problems
I have a 1993 4runner 3.0
I HAVE searched
My rear window still works sometimes. So all the info I have found doesn't help me much. I'll list the symptoms and maybe someone can help me out.
Doesn't work when it's cold or wet
It's pretty slow, sometimes it needs help for the last 4 inches or so.
It makes a clicking noise sometimes, but it doesn't move then...
I hope this makes sense to someone.
thanks,
Matt

iirc, on the first gens a rear window motor from a corolla would do the trick. on the second gens though, im not sure. youll have to scrounge around a few wrecking yards and see what you can find.
be prepared that the replacement motor may end up giving you the same grief all over again later on.
take a few minutes and pull the switch from your centre console, take it apart and clean it up. you wont believe the stuff that gets into those switches!

I have a passenger side rear door that has a bad switch... It would go down fine, but wouldn't go up at all. could I pull that one out and put it in the rear?
also, how much was the motor at napa?

the only place in town that sells a tail gate motor is checker and it's $118
but napa has the door motors for $99 but they said they don't carry anything for the tail gate
so should I go for the driver side door motor?

i'd say, buy a good used one, or buy a new one from the Dealer. Talk to Strap22, I bet he could get you a great deal.
Actually, what you SHOULD do it get one from a 1st gen 4runner, and splice on the connector. The first gen motors use a metal housing. The 2nd gens use a plastic housing that wears out, and lets water and foreign material in. Eventually the worn out gear just hogs a hole in the 2nd gen style, and they go to pot.

if its just the plug on the motor, its two wires, usually a red and a green. total time to swap the plug, not including panel removal etc, less than a minute.

well, I put this off and then summer hit and the window worked 50% of the time again. But it has stopped working again and now I want it to work 100% of the time.
I put in a new motor and it works 95% of the time one way and not at all the other. It's not because of anything being rusted or in need of lube because the motor is just hanging out loose in the back. But on the direction that doesn't work there is always a clicking noise in the back somewhere, I think it's around the rear drivers side corner... I don't really know
any ideas? I haven't taken apart the switch yet to clean it like I was told, I plan to do that tomorrow.
thanks,

Ok
I went out and cleaned the switch and got to the relay...
Up works most of the time and down never works. The relay clicks on both up and down. I really am not too sure of what I am doing. Could I have screwed up the wire splicing? as in, does it work one way if only one of the two wires is connected?

I just joined this forum. Looking for help with a 91 4 Runner rear window. My rear window works with the switch inside but will not move up or down with the key from the outside. I have a donor 4 runner that i have been swapping parts and still can not get it to even fire the solenoids on the control board. I have checked all the switches inside the tailgate...3 that I am aware of and when I say checked i both swapped them out of the donor rig and cleaned and continuity tested the originals. I rigged up a 9 volt battery with wires to test all the solenoids on the board. six total and all fire. I know there is a switch for the rear wiper but I am assuring it is fine because when I turn on the rear wiper the inside switch will not move the window until the wiper parks. I have also swapped out the rear switch, it just pops off the back of the key cylinder and you can activate it with a screwdriver but no change. I am at a loss and am down to tracing wires unless anyone has any ideas? I would think since it will not move either way the common wire from the switch to the board would be the best place to start. Thoughts?
