hey guys i have a 92 toyota pickup short bed exc dlx and unfortunately i have a split drive shaft and today i decided to grease all the joints in which i did. I decided to try to move the shaft in which i seen that it has a lot of play in the center support bearing, the bearing didnt seem bad itself but just alot of play anyone know if this should have this much play? also i have no noise coming from the driveshaft(as to why i believe the bearing is not shot) thanks guys!

 

You sure its the bearing thats moving or the rubber bushing that holds the bearing in place. Cause that has lots of movment and its supposed to. Aslong as the actual bearing isnt loose then your good. But the bearings do go bad, not very often but it happens. How many miles on that thing? You know if its ever been changed?

I'm betting it's the rubber bushing. I used to worry about mine, but with regular greasing & 274,000 miles, not a single issue related to the split shaft.

 

Does both of you guys have a grease fitting on the actual bearing?
My taco doesn't, kinda disappointing.

 

Mine doesn't have a grease fitting on that actually bearing that I know of and from what I seem the bearing looks loose inside of that rubber outside piece but I'm not really sure guys.. And its only got 120,000 miles

 

Id say roll with it. Just keep an eye on it.

 

Yeah I wasn't saying it had grease fittings.... I just meant as a whole I've had 0 problems with my entire driveshaft.

 

I had to change mine out last night ($94) . When I bought the truck there was a little play in the rubber housing (about a 1/4 in. each way) It had obviously been changed before and was cheaply made compared to the new one I bought. Upon further inspection I realized that the rubber mount underneath the transfer case was completely sagging and worn out so I would assume that minor misallignment was enough pressure on the support bearing to tear the rubber completely around the bearing. You might want to check your tansfercase mount also, just in case.

 

Sucky,, Thats an expensive part. But the oem ones do last a long time.
Ya someone before you must have used a china bearing if it went out that fast. I think they use clay and wax to make their bearings. I think their supposed to be steel or some hard substance like that.
