92 or 94?
I just got a 92 4Runner 4x4 SR5 manual from one of the local mechanics, they said nothing was wrong with it minus the rear window motor. I have got it titled and liscenced and have driven it for about 5 days now. Since I have been driving it, I have noticed there is a rod knock that is getting louder, which means I will eventually have to pull the motor and try to find a new/rebuilt/junkyard find to replace my terminal motor with. I have also noticed the power steering pump is going out.
Last night I was browsing Craigslist and found a 94 SR5 4Runner 4x4 automatic. It was listed in the parts cars list because it needs the rear brake line redone and some electrical work under dash had been chewed through.
I work a seasonal job which puts me on an Island without automobiles for 6 months out of the year, so during the summer I might only put 1-2,000 miles on a vehicle. I don't really care how the vehicle looks, but it must have 4 wheel drive, and I really like the 4Runner. Each of these has rust over the rear fenders, but my 92 has significant body dents and was in a low speed accident. The 94 looks clean.
I don't know if I should go for the 94, which is only $300 more than I paid for the 92, or just keep the 92 and replace the engine. What would be easier? Probably the electrical and brake job than a motor pull, eh?

Does it got oil in it? LOL Dont be offended if you didn't check, or did. I've seen oil pan plugs not screwed in all the way make engines knock real quick!
It's not hard to miss dripping oil. Especially if you live in a rainy climate such as I do.

No, it had oil when I got it 2 weeks ago, the day I started driving it I changed the oil, changed the oil filter, check to make sure the oil pan was secure.
not to sound brash, but if you have ever owned or borrowed an aircooled VW, you know how to spot an oil leak. Those little cars seem to mark their territory.
