92 4runner speed sensor

92 4runner speed sensor
I took my speed sensor out today from the tranny and checked it out. Not sure how you tell if it is bad. My speedo works about 1 out of every 4 days. Then the check engine light and OD light comes on. How do you tell if it is bad? I am still just learning about my 4runner and need all the help I can get.
