'92 4Runner with 3.0 help
Hey guys, Here's my situation..
my 86 4Runner with the 22RE needs a lot of transmission/driveline work that I don't know much about and the truck would be out of commission while I tear into it to learn. So I'd need a daily driver
I've found a '92 4Runner with the 3.0 and 196K miles for $1K, the interior is spotless, but the exterior has some rust. The motor and tranny run great, but it needs a new starter. So I was planning on picking this up while I work on my 86, and then eventually once I get the 86 back on the road I can steal what I can outta the 92 that will fit into/onto the 86.
I've done some searching around, and it seems like the general consensus is that the 3vze is a turd? Is it worth $1k for a daily driver and then updating the 86 with what I can steal off the 92? Are the 3VZE known for going much past 200K miles?
Thanks for your help guys

92 4Runner for a thousand bucks,yes.
Dude I'd buy it.Ive owned two other Toyotas 4x4 pickups, both 22r and 22re.My current truck,3rd one is a 95 4x4 pickup 3.0 v6 I love it just as much, maybe more.Ive done so much work to it,replaced rear axle I took off one of my other trucks.Built a custom leaf spring stack by combining a couple of leafs from one of my other trucks onto this one.Took the bed off my 86 and put it on this truck.New shocks.Head gasket replacement. This just bonds me to my rig more.Aint nuttin wrong with the 3.0.Differant strokes for differant folks.Buy it,you might decide to take stuff off the other one for this one.

Thanks guys, I'm meeting up with the guy again today to look through the truck a little more thoroughly. Is there anything in particular I should look for with the 3.0 motor?

If you have access to a kit, do a cooling system pressure check.
Also, the starter probably doesn't need replacing....just replace the contacts. The Denso starters last forever.

^^^ what he said. Head gasket done, or to be done ASAP, and the number 6 exhaust valve burns out. Its relatively easy to tell if the valve is toast. Start the engine, and loosely hold a rag in your hand up to the tailpipe. if the rag tries to suck into the exhaust, #6 is most likely gone already and needs replacement.which means replacing the head gasket as well once you tear the head off.
This method isn't full-proof, and you could still have some damage to #6 or other valves, so a compression test may be in order to double check.
I have owned 4 22re's and one 3.slo. I love the 22re, but my 3.0 has so much more grunt. These are great engines, a few mods and they are very reliable...head gasket, and exhaust cross-over mod. give it an ISR, and free flow exhaust and it helps wake up the lump a bit.
good luck

Thanks guys, I'm sure this is all stuff I could find searching around here, but I'm kinda on a time crunch, and don't have much time to browse while I'm here at work.
I'm meeting the guy in a couple hours here, I'll post up some pics when I pick er up
