I was able to get both bolts out with just a wrench from the bottom. No skid plate removal, no long extension set up.
The problem with extensions is all the torque you loose, particularly with an impact which works on a hammer design. The torque cannot be effectively transferred through the extensions because the throw of the hammer internal to your impact gun is not long enough to overcome all the slop in the extensions and universal.
If you are using an impact you'd need 1 long extension with an impact rated universal to get the job done. If you don't have those, you're much better off with the breaker bar since your arm can overcome all the slop. Also remember that you are much stronger pulling than pushing. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Yeah both of mine were done from the bottom with the breaker bar...for the top one it was as I said above but I controlled how much I would let the universals move with my free hand to get as much torque on it as I could...Also, I founf out you can get the wires out of the way to do it if you play with them long enough. You basically have to learn to become a contortionist. Good luck man.

ok! got it done now! i figured the bolt was all heated up along with the tranny and the starter so all metals were expanded and STUCK. so i let it cool for 1 hour while i worked on taking my traction bars off. after that, i gave it a nice heave-ho... BAM. it broke free. so i get all the bolts off and what a bizinatch to get it out of there but i got it out without much effort. my tetris skills had to come into play though.
i opened her up and it was text book. i cleaned it up, replaced the contact and i was ready to drop her back in. too bad i forgot how i pulled it out and after 20 minutes of trying to get the starter back in with the help of my friend, i figured, lets go a$$ end up first and voila... got it in. starts great now! the real test will be after i leave my truck out in the parking lot all day in the sun during work.
again guys, thanks for all your help and support. i couldnta done it without you guys. yotatech rocks!!!!!
and of couse thanks to jdeneen for helping me out!!!!!
