91 4x4 about to drive me nuts...
#21
I'll jack it up tomorrow and try spinning the wheels to see if the hubs are engaged or not. If they are, I'll take them off, clean then regrease. However, if it is the hubs staying engaged, even if I fix that...I still do not want that noise going even when I'm in 4wd.

I think so. I have a question: is it at all possible that the transfer case is not, in fact, in high 2wd but is in high 4wd? Then, if the hubs were disengaged, you'd have your axles rotating and your wheels rotating, but not at the same exact speed, necessarily. Would it generate noise for the hubs to be disengaged while the axles were being driven by the transfer case?

Well, the cv shafts turn fine by hand in 2wd, hubs unlocked sitting on all four. I guess it's not the cv's, hubs, or the transfer case. It's got to be either the brakes or wheel bearings.

Yeah, I'm going to replace the cv boots when I have the rest pulled apart trying to fix whatever this damn noise is.
What kind of grease should I put back in there? Sorry for all the newb questions guys, this is my first adventure with 4x4's so bear with me, I really do appreciate the help.

my friends truck did this... it was the cv joints he wanted to make sure thats what it was before he changed them so he stuck a grease gun in a tear in his cv boot and greased it ton. Then drove it around and the noise stoped so he bought new cv boots and put them on and all was well.
