91 3VZE Code 52 Help

I have been working for about a month on a 91 3.0 truck that I inherited with 200k miles. Long story short, I had the heads redone due to bad valves and compression problems. I got it all put back together and it runs but this is where I need some help.

I jumped the E1 and Te1 (I think those were the two, just off the top of my head) and set the timing to 10 degrees. Now after researching on these forums when the jumper is removed it should slide to 8degrees on the timing or somewhere near there. Well, my timing slides all the way up past 10 degrees to what would probably be 15-20 degrees if it was marked.

This can't be right so I pulled the engine code with the check engine light and it came up with a 52. It is the only code that comes up. This corresponds to the knock sensor unfortunately. I know now after reading that I should have replaced this after doing the rebuild but I didn't research that well. I also know I need to clean the connections where the sensor plugs in and will do that today.

I guess my question would be, is the knock sensor not working messing with my timing? I don't have a lot of experience with newer vehicles, just old 60s-70's Fords and Chevy's. Or can anyone shed some light on what might be causing this?

Would it be possible that I might be off with my timing belt/pulleys? I aligned them with the factory marks and set the engine to 0 degrees TDC etc... when putting it back together like the factory service manual said. After doing more research I did realize I put both pully's on the same way when one needs to be flange out on the drivers side. Anyways, more rambling... just cannot figure out why my timing is going so far off.

Thanks

Edit: All new plug wires, plugs, distributor cap/rotor. New fuel filter, new gas. Just in case some are wondering.

Fixed!

Sure enough, the knock sensor connections were a bit loose so I cleaned them up and the code went away. Truck times right and everything now. Working very well I might add but a little bumpy on the roads, probably due to the 215k miles.

I also remounted the timing components the correct way this time and maybe that had some effect also.

Anyways, my advice, like so many others on this forum is to check/replace that knock sensor wire if you ever do a rebuild.

Thanks.
