91 3.0 just replaced HG- now coolant leak and thin white smoke

Ok between my brother and I attempting to replace the HG on my 91 3.0, and the shop fixing everything we messed up, I finally have my 4runner back and it runs. About 15 miles after getting it fixed, it now blows a small amount of white smoke at idle and a little more under strain (like when taking off). There is also a coolant leak on the top of the motor, but I can't pinpoint it. Coolant pools on top of the intake. It is running down behind and dripping off of the front of the trans. No water in the oil (yet). Do you guys think the HG failed or maybe the intake gasket?

When I did my HG a few weeks ago I had a similar coolant leak, it turned it was leaking from the hose that connects to the coolant bypass pipe. It was running along the pipe and making it look like it was coming from somewhere deeper in the engine. Try feeling around back by the coolant bypass and cranking the hose clamps down (or replacing them if the original spring type clamps are still on there, it can be hard to get the old hoses to seal up if you didn't replace them).

As for the smoke out the tail pipit might take a few more miles to burn all the coolant, etc out of the exhaust system especially if you have been going easy on it since you got it back.

Thanks Happy Adventure. From the looks of that picture, that could be a likely culprit.

I guess after I get the leak fixed, I will just drive it for awhile and see if it stops smoking

Also check for leaks where the coolant hoses connect to the throttle body.
