Why can't the automatic be towed in neutral? What happens mechanically that causes damage?
Let me get this straight, to flat tow an automatic, you need to pull the DS? I'm assuming the 5spd is fine towed in neutral.

Because none of the moving parts in an automatic receive lubrication without the torque converter pumping the fluid through. Since you're in neutral, you're not spinning the torque converter.

the 5speeds have a similar problem but it only effects the t-case. if you so not disconnect the rear drive shaft the t-case will not get proper oiling
