90 4runner alternator

yesterday my charge light came on while driving... i noticed it the rpm's were above 3k the light would go away... today the charge light will not turn off at all. i have another alternator that got swamped and went bad. i read about the wire brushes going bad inside the alternator and was wondering if anyone knows if i could take the brushes out of my old one and put into my current one.. if anyone can help it would be great. thanks

You could try it. I just replaced the brushes in mine with brand new ones and it didn't work. I believe I got oil inside the windings though. The PS pump was leaking right into the alternator. Mine is a 22RE. I ended up buying a new alternator.

If your replacing the brushes and the holder, it's pretty easy. If you are only doing the brushes you have to solder them in. You can order the new ones with the holder for like $24. Brushes alone were $9.

Send it into Boyle Future Tech in California to be rebuilt and upgraded. I sent mine to them, and it's AWESOME.

My alternator went out this weekend, I went and got a brush kit from the toyota dealer, installed it, then went and got it tested at a parts store, they said it failed. I was kinda freaking out, so I desided to pull the brushes out and make sure everything was clean. Brought it to a different parts store and it passed.New Brushes from the Dealer were $18....I'd go with the brush kit from the dealer then get it tested at a parts store or maybe 2 if it fails
good luck
