89Runner 4WD Noise/Clunking/Plz help
I have a 89' Runner, all has been well. It has 31x10.50x15's. It is a 5 speed with auto hubs. I have not used 4WD in a while, well today I put it in 4wd and go across the yard, tool around a minute.
When I took it out of 4WD and started to back up to disengage a popping/clunking noise comes from the front left wheel, and you can kinda feel it.If I put it in 4WD again it does not do it. Then when I go to take it out again it clunks when I back up slowly.
I am not real good with mechanical stuff, but I am trying. The boots, look good, no grease showing/flung around. It seems as if the hub is not disengaging or messed up. As far as I know the hubs are stock and I have 224K on it(3.0).
Any ideas what to look for and what to check? I do not want to get rid of it or then again I am low on "project funds" as I have a son on the way.So, any help from the experts would be great.
Thanks in advance for any help/info offered.

I had this EXACT problem a few years ago. My front left auto hub crapped out and needed replaced.
Heres what you need:
WARN or Aisin Manual hubs. I chose Warns because they are new and have a lifetime warranty, and dont need taken apart and rebuilt like a set of used aisins. (new ones are outrageously expensive)
54mm Spindle Socket
Wheel Bearing nut Kit
Gaskets from the dealer
And THIS guide http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/autohub/
After this pretty easy swap you get some extra features for your 4runner.
2WD low range
shift on the fly 4WD (if you are going under 30)
No more backing up to shift out of 4WD
