'89 pickup 3.0 to 22re swap help

Here is what I have.

I just purchased a ’89 pickup yesterday for $1100. I have always admired these trucks but this is the first one I have owned and I have no experience with them.

The frame of the truck is very solid as well as the cabin. The interior is clean and in good condition. The bed of the truck is ok on the exterior but the pan is rusted through in a few places. The rear bumper is missing and the front bumper is rusted through on the driver side corner. Over all the truck itself is in great condition for a ’89 model.

The story is that this truck was originally a 3.0. The guy I bought it from purchased it from a guy who had been swapping it over to 22re.

The guy I bought it from intended to finish the swap but lost interest in it when he found out the original engine mounts had been cut off and needed new ones fabricated and welded in. He did not feel he could do it himself and not knowing a welder or have access to one gave up. The truck has been sitting in his garage for over a year since.

From what I understand the engine had been in the truck and it was running but was not drivable because of the missing mounts. I was told that everything needed to finish it is here except for the engine mounts. The engine was supposedly rebuilt at some point and the trans was robed from a lower mileage truck.

The list of what I have identified not attached to truck.
- 22re engine
- 5spd transmission/transfer case
- Shifter levers for transmission and transfer case
- Front and rear drive shafts
- Crossmember frame
- Radiator
- Exhaust manifold (bolted to engine)
- Intake manifold and throttle body
- Air filter box (with what looks to be MAF mounted to it)
- Alternator
- Some exhaust piping
- Spare tire (nice to have)
- Battery – (may not be good but can use as core)
- Some other odds and ends

The biggest concern I have right now is whether or not the wiring really has been all switched over. The guy acted as though it had been and saying that engine and trans had been all installed and running at one point but was just missing the engine mounts. Looking at the wiring I can see that it has been tagged and labeled with tape so that gives me some hope that it is all in place for the 22re swap.

I am aircraft mechanic involved in rebuilding and modernizing DC-3 aircraft and have a lot of experience with VW cars but am new to Toyota pickups. I feel confident I can get this done but could use all the information I can get.

Also, is there any source of premade engine mounts or fabricating plans for mounts for this swap?

If anyone has or knows of any good posts and/or other sources of information that could help me through this project please share. Anything that would save me time or headaches is appreciated.

I am willing to share with everyone else with what I learn from this project.

Thanks everyone.

Be nice to know where you are??

The complete Factory Service Manual for your truck would be a big help.

If I recall it is where the engine mounts attach to the frame the frame side is in a different location between the 3.0 and the 22re

You can get the engine mounts lots of places

Most are going the other way to do the 3.4 swap

Someone might very well make a kit I never needed one so never looked .

Working on my 3.4 Swap I bought the new frame mounts You might be able to find the ones for the 22Re new ??

Someone doing the 3.4 on a 22Re might have what you need or parting out a 22Re vehicle .

I wonder just what they used to support the engine maybe it hung from the hoist or chain block ??

No matter you have your work cut out best of luck

The engine mounts are in different locations between the two motors. A good welder should be able to weld in the correct mounts. To do a complete harness swap you are going to need to swap from bumper to bumper. Stay with the same year harness. Each year Toyota changed at least one or two things in each harness or plug. From my experience on doing a harness swap, between removing two harnesses and installing the one into the truck it is a 40 hour job. I will dig thru some of my threads and see what I can find on doing the swap and post some links.

On the 89-95 trucks you disassemble the dash starting from the passenger side and work your way to the drivers side. You will need to remove the complete dash. The following link is for 84-88 trucks but several things apply to you. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...4-88-a-278925/ once you get the dash out, The main harness comes out from the drivers side. You will have to pull the harness from the drivers fender out thru the interior on drivers side.

Photobucket removed several pictures in my links. On the tail light and fuel tank harness, you may need to have the donor truck harness as well. Toyota likes to change a few things on there. Injector harness you can unplug from the computer and run it out into the engine bay. Your head light harness you can unplug from the fuse box on the side and remove it easily.

In my threads in my signature, I have thru out my builds where I show bits and pieces of where I removed and installed different harnesses. Even though my trucks are the previous generation, everything is nearly the same once you get the dash out. Stay with the same generation of harness. Dont try to use an 84-88 harness. To many differences.
