'89 not starting...

yes you probably heard this before... but my friends '89 efi wont start... he took it swimming, and yes she went into a coma. When he tried firing her up, she clicked so we figured it was the starter.. when we replaced the starter, it still didnt start, we tried jumping it, nothing, but we heard a little noise that sounded like a poloroid camera charnging its flash from somewhere in the engine. we tried kicked starting it but the gears would locked when truck was rolling.... we dont know wut to do now. could it be the clutch? or maybe something internal in the block?

hahah good thing i didnt take my truck swimming that day.. hehe

Can you turn the crank by hand? Put a socket on the bolt in the center of the main crankshaft pulley, get a HUGE breaker/cheater bar on the ratchet and see if you can turn the crank. If it doesn't turn, your buddy hydro-locked the motor, and is in need of a replacement.

Also, did you check all the fuses, and fusible links? Battery and alt good? How 'bout the voltage regulator?

check the AFM vane and make sure it's not stuck from the water / crud it injested.

and didn't I ask if it would spin if the plugs were removed to which you replied "nope...dead.. doesnt kick " ?
at least try before telling someone no.

its called hydrolocking, and you are lucky you didn't mess up more stuff while trying to "kickstart" the truck. Lesson for the day: Water does not compress like air/fuel so if you take you truck swimming and it dies, NEVER EVER try to start it before clearing out the plugs and any other garbage in the cylinders. Same thing goes when you roll a truck. Oil also does not compress

I would take your entire air intake rubber tubing apart, and check for crap in there. And as Abe suggested, look for debri in the airflow meter possibly holding the AFM open.

so the air-speed / velocity of an african swallow (or would that be european?) makes a difference with regards to landscaping and the bridge of eternal peril?
... and the air/flow velocity through the AFM depends on Tim the Enchanter, and your favorite color?

i'll tell him to clean it up and make sure there isnt any crud in the air flow meter thats holding it open or closed. could it be that the engine isnt getting fuel? i drive a carb so i dont know much about the injection. thanks for the tips.. question about the cylinders, how do you clean them out?
