89 4Ruuner Brake Master Cylinder

This came up in a post a few years back. I have an 89 4Runner, all stock. Need to replace the brake master cylinder. Ordered on online, wrong part. Started researching and found conflicting info on the correct part. Seems it is a discontinued part from Toyota and all the aftermarket stores are selling what is supposed to be a compatible part but won't work on my truck. I believe the one I need is 47201-35600. The new one that I have been directed to is 47201-35670. This one would require a complete change in brake line location and not sure about the booster even being compatible. Before I locate and buy a new one I thought I would see if anyone else has the same issue.

Just what do you mean a complete change in brake lines??

Has someone in the past done some sort of Booster/Master Cylinder upgrade or down grade so you no longer have the set up your buying parts for??

Only thing I can think of if nothing works.

Thanks wyoming. I've had the Runner since 2001 so I don't think it's been modified. I tend to think it is probably manufacturing date issue. The sticker on the door has 10/88 on it so I think it is one of those items that a couple of parts were different on depending on the date. Usually I can go by the vin to order but since Toyota has discontinued the part for the 89's and probably the 88's, I have to go by what the vendors online list which i found out is wrong. My FSM does show the correct in the diagrams and I think I have now located a aftermarket part that will work but won't know till it arrives. I really wanted to see if anyone else ran into the same issue.
And for as your brake line question; the brake tubes come straight up from the cylinder on the original part. On the one I was sent they are located on the left side, (installed) which means I would have to replace those with new tubing to make it work. Makes me wonder if there would be compatibility issues with the existing booster also.
Hope I didn't go on to long… just want you to see what I was seeing.

I will look at my 88 later today!!

The brake lines attach on the left side interesting !!

Almost like it is made for a right hand drive vehicle.

Pictures of what you have would be interesting .

You bought a 12 year old Toyota and don`t think it was touched That would have to have been from some nice old lady that just used it to haul groceries in poor weather.

Quick clarification wyoming, the brake tubes on the OEM master cylinder, still in truck, are set up in the 12 o'clock position. The one that was supposed to be the correct replacement are set up on the left hand side say the 3 o'clock position. That's why I have a mismatch. Not really looking to replace brake lines and I know they can't be re-bent. Oh, yeah the Runner only had 2 owners, the 2nd only having it for about 6 months before I bought it. California car, bought it when I was living there. The original owners took it in to the dealer for all the required maintenance including head gasket replacement when it was recalled. 320,000 and running strong. It's just getting to the point where any rubber/seal material is starting to fail. I've had to replace clutch master, rear axle seals and some other items that are just finally wearing out after 27 years.

Looks to be that 88 might have been a production change midyear.

The 88 has one line coming in the top 12 o`clock the other at 3 o`clock.

Now this was the 22re Engine so that might be the difference

the 92 3.0 had both lines at the 3 o`clock position

Brake line is cheap and easy to work with once one does it a little

Yes the 22r was a bit different then the 3VEZ. I think it has to do with production dates. Toyota probably switched things around late in the 89's. What I am probably finding is a part for the 89 pickup which was a different design then the 89 4Runner. I think I found one and should know by weeks end.
