'89 4runner: sideview mirror options?

I recently picked up an '89 4runner. It has these "California" style mirrors that look like something off of a one-ton tow rig (pictured below). The install looks original. Was this a factory option?

I'd like to install the normal Toyota mirrors that mount on the upper edge of the door. Is there a chance that they use the same mounting holes (as the upper mount) of the ones I want to delete? -- Matt

yep they are factory. I have them also, I think i just found another reason to go back to the junkyard, see if i can't find something a little smaller.
If you don't mind drilling into the door skin, you could put almost any mirror on there, but you will have s few holes to patch on the door skin after you remove those big mirrors.

you'll probably pick up 4-5 mpg's by going to a smaller mirror too. lol
how would the pick up mirrors look on there?

in a word...Better!

I need to measure my 92 mirror holes and see if they would bolt on without egging or drilling new holes. If i have to drill new holes, i am going to find some nicer, maybe electric adjustable mirrors...maybe electric.

So many mods, so little time....

I swapped the regular small mirrors today and they bolted right on. They both use the same factory position and the same holes (except for the lower holes on the "big truck" mirrors which now need to be hammered flat and patched).

Get chrome and paint them black? Is there something special about the sr5 ones I'm missing or are you talking about metal vs plastic? Either way, ya black
