I'm adding a keyless entry device...

I searched through the forum and found some references that it may be on the left (driver) side kick panel. I looked and only found the speed control module below the fusebox. Is it in this general area - maybe buried behind something or is it somewhere else entirely...? Perhaps behind the fusebox or up above the AC duct...?

PS If it matters it's an early '88 22RE 4Runner w/ factory power locks/windows.

 

Searching the forums further I see references to a black box on the left kick panel. My '88 doesn't have this - it has a brown box that is the speed control module. There's also a flasher relay below the fuse box. But nothing like a lock control relay which should have wires for the locks and windows.

I may try pulling the white plastic fuse box out and see what's behind it...

 

...pulled the cruise module and the white plastic fuse box mount to look behind - no joy.

The wires from the door lock switch inside the door disappear into a taped loom and splits inside the kick panel to go several direction including the engine and the fusebox and the rear of the truck and the opposite side of the dash...

It's raining outside again and I'm running out of obvious places to look so I'll hang this project up for this weekend. If anybody knows where they hid this appreciate a response or a PM.

In my book, the page on locks refers back to the power window and door lock control relay.

the relay is on the side behind driver seat.

you can unplug it and see if the test in the chart above works out.
these pics are from the body electrical, no mention of a lock relay.

The "Power Window and Door Lock Relay" from the first diagram is shown in the 3rd diagram I believe as simply "Power Window Relay". (The one behind the seat is likely for the rear window...)

Anyway the "POwer Window Relay" in the 3rd diagram places it approximately in the middle of the drivers side dash possibly sharing the same bracket as the parking brake switch. I've gutted most of the lower dash and to the best of my knowledge it's not up there unless it's being the instrument panel itself at the very top.

What year are the diagrams from? Mine is actually a very early 88 w/ a mid 87 build date.

Those pics are 86 factory repair manual.

 

Found it... Passenger side kick panel BEHIND the ECM. I'd looked there earlier and only saw the ECM. The ECM completely covered the relay which was actually in a cranny behind the ECM. On 2nd inspection had someone operate the lucks in the position they were already in. Used a stethescope and followed the clicks...
