88 4runner a/c removal...?

i would like to know how to remove my a/c from my 88 4runner as I never use it.... but not sure how, aside from undoing the hoses.... is there coolant in the hoses or is there freon/refrigerant..? that will be flowing if I undo the hoses.... actually I'm not sure if the a/c even works... hahaha... in the middle of doing my timing chain replacement so now is a good time to do it.....thanks

There could be refrigerant, R12 or R134a, in the lines. Don't know about BC but in the US it's illegal to vent the refrigerant to the atmosphere. You may find an a/c shop that will evacuate the stuff for free (they can recycle / reuse it if it's clean) or for a low fee.
After the system is purged, it's pretty much just unbolt things, but the evaporator under the dash may be a pain.

hi Brock,
the ecological route would be to purge the system of any freon gas and take it to a recyling facility. If the system had a leak .. well then all the gas has long since gone ..poof! If the a/c still works you could pull the compressor off ( leave hoses connected ) & tie it off to the side and get yourself a shorter belt to link up all the pulleys. Sorry about the late posting but I just joined. Mark

Wink

Before you unbolt the system you might want to see if anyone wants to buy any of the parts.

I guess then us that live in the USA if some careless suv driver backs into your condenser vents your AC who pays the EPA fine!!

I talked to my insurance agent about this " Your Insurance will not pay for that" Interesting as my $4,800.00 insurance premium keeps going up and less and less is covered every year.

Something to think about.

Toyota A/C unit

In Canada we have no EPA type fine for an accident.. bummer for you guys but a service shop will recover your remaining freon and charge you for that as well as the repair and new condenser & refrigerant. as for car ins. I hear you I've been insured in 3 diff provinces so far, lol, come on up and ins will be half as much.
