'87 Pickup - 22R timing procedure

My VECI label us unreadable, so I'm trying to get some info to do the timing and idle correctly. The smog shop told me that my Idle should be 700 and timing should be set at the "0" mark. I have done that, but my idle is kind of rough. The manual says that some models need to have vacuum hoses plugged or even jumpers on some electrical connectors. Anyone have a label or know the procedure for this particular model? (22R, carbureted, MT)

To set the timing correctly on your 22R, you will need to disconnect the rubber vacuum hoses that are connected to the distributor and plug them closed. Then set the timing by rotating the distributor in either way to set the timing to 0 degrees. Tighten down the distributor bolt, reconnect the distributor vacuum lines correctly, remember which hose went on the two ends. Now re-check that the timing has advanced to 8-12 degrees and your done.

You may or may not need to adjust the idle speed afterwards.

Idle speed, timing and idle fuel mixture are all correlated. After adjusting any of those, the others should be checked and adjusted accordingly.

Typically the California carburetors have a plug for the idle mixture from the factory which is why I did not state that it might need an adjustment.
