My gauge only worked when full, then after 80miles it would go to empty. It turns out it was the sending unit in the tank. $101.04 at the dealer pretty easy to put in.

Sounds like the upper 3/4 of the wiper( movment) in your sender are shorted. I dont know the specs for the sender ( ohms), but you can pull it and test it. Its probably your sender like diablo said, but you can check the gauge first. just in case. If you can find the specs for the sender you can put resistors ( matching the readings for empty ,half and full) in series with the gauge( inbetween the gauge and tank) and ground them, and that will tell you if the gauge is ok. You could also check the resistance between the gauge and ground( through the sender) when the tank is full and empty and use that for your high and low resistor choice.

Or you could just go buy a new one! ha ha

If you do drop the tank to replace the sender, unbolt the drive shaft at the rear and wire it out of the way, then dont undo the filler and breather at the tank just unscrew the 3 screws at the gas cap it makes its alot easier to drop and put back in, takes about 4 hours. I would spray everything down with PB blaster or the like a couple of times before tear down. It sure is nice having a gauge that works mine was out for 4 years
