87 4runner surges during acceleration

I am having surging issues. Once I get up to city or highway speed and back off on the peddal just enough to maintain speed it runs smooth but if I push on it enough to gain a little speed it really starts to surge a lot. It idles nice, but also seems to not have as much power as it should. New air filter, fairly new plugs wires cap and rotor. The vacuum hoses all look ok. Any ideas?

You guys should maybe try the FSM compression test for burned valve?? I don't know exactly what you mean by surge but when my valve was F'd it wouldn't gain speed very good. It almost sounds like a fuel issue though.. Sorry, I'll bump ya.

Changed my cap, rotor, wires and plugs and it fixed everything. Check your plugs again to see if you've got white junk building up on it.
