87 4Runner No start No CEL
Good Morning Guys,
Sorry for making my 1st post a difficult one. I am helping a coworker with a new to him 87 4runner with the 22RE and 5speed. He's had the rig since the spring and it had a intermittent starting issue that he thought he fixed with a ford style starter relay. Now the issue is he isn't getting the CEL with key on and the fuel pump doesn't come on, nor does the truck start at all. He brought the rig to me yesterday and the 1st thing I noticed was the 80amp fuse from the battery under the hood had been butchered and the lid to the fuse was missing(as was 1/2 the fuse body) and it had been melting the plastic fuse block cap. I replaced the fuse and the wire going to it(wire was brittle and spliced twice). Once that repair was finished I checked for spark and we have spark to the distributer and out the distributer to the plugs. I then disconnect the fuel pump lead and applied power with my power probe and the pump is working. I can also excite the wire at the ecm connection and the pump runs fine so I know that circuit is ok. The owner had replaced the ecm relay under the drivers side footwell, but I noticed the 7.5amp fuse marked IGN is blown. Is this fuse related to the CEL and the ecm not firing the injectors? There is power to the one side of the fuse and the other side is dead shorted somewhere. I will head out to the shop in a few after doing more searches on the site and see if I can pull the lower fuse block out and get the wire color from this circuit. If anything I'd like to make a fused by pass to see if the rig will run and return the CEL to functioning like is should.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks Bill

As a follow up to this thread I found that the owner had put the ECM relay in upside down and it was creating a dead short to ground. I tested the pin outs on the IGN circuit and as long as the ecm relay was removed the fuse wouldn't blow. double checked relay orientation from a pic on the web and Viola truck runs and the fuse does not blow as well as the check engine light works again.
