87 4Runner auto to manual help

I have nice 87 4Runner with a 22re/auto trans and would like to swap it over to a manual! I have a donor rig 86 4Runner 22re/5speed. The only thing missing on the donor is the motor. My main questions are as follows. Do I need the manual ecu and are the plugs the same? Can I just swap them (ecu) out and have everything work? Can I swap out the gauge cluster with the speedo cable from the donor? Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Engine Harness and Sensors stay with the ECU .

Are you just swapping the engine??

I’ll start off by saying I haven’t personally done this swap myself, however It’s something I plan on doing in the future. As a result, I have done a lot of reading on the subject. From everything I have read, swapping the ECU is asking for trouble. A lot of the time when people try swapping ECU’s from different years they aren’t 100% compatible and end up having to chase a bunch of bizarre electrical/engine problems. It is much simpler to just jumper the neutral safety switch and “trick the ECU”. There are some great write ups on this forum that go into detail on how to wire everything up. Just search auto to manual swap.

What auto trans are you swapping out????

A gear drive unit or the mega-ton co-joined unit?? Inquiring minds want to know.

Maybe the AMC unit?

Anyway; easy swap just hang pedals and use -3AN hose and fittings, you will be fine.

Also do not forget to put in the pilot bushing in the crankshaft or you will bust you W56 trans.

I have no idea what auto trans it is! One thing I do know is that sucker will be up for grabs once the surgery is over! I think this should go pretty smooth as I have the donor 4Runner to go off of. A little reverse engineering a clutch kit, slave cylinder, few beers and some head scratching should do it. I hope!
