87 4runner AC condenser question

My 87 runner has had a hole in the condenser since I purchased it. During prior ownership the radiator support bolt decided to make a new home in the pre-cooler. My question is this. The replacement condenser appears to come in two forms for first gen runners. One has what appears to be a two piece condenser, the smaller looking condenser bolted to the front of the Main condenser is usually refered to as a "pre-cooler". The second version that is available does not have the pre-cooler and is plumbed to not require changing any of the hard lines, it bolts right in place with no mods. Are the two interchangeable even though their volume is different due to the precooler? My pre-cooler is the part with the actual hole in it. I was thinking of using the hard line from an 87 pup that would bolt right in, eliminating the precooler and essentially looking like that non precooler spec'd version. I was told by the stealership that doing so would cause my condenser to ice due to too much freon being in the system (even though I would compensate for the lower volume). I thought maybe the pre-cooler version is for rear heat/ac but my runner doesn't have this.

A Toy mech told me to do the same swap for my 89; it doesn't ice & works great. But something to consider on the icing- I'm in FL...

If it's just your pre-cooler, I think I still have my old condenser (nothing wrong, just replaced cuz I'm super anal about parts replacment & my wife can't stand riding in the Toy w/o AC). If you're interested, drop me a line at hartjeff@comcastDOTnet. You pay shipping & can have it.
