86 turbo. knocking while turning - help
got an 86 4runner sr5 turbo with 31 inch tires and no lift i think. when i turn too sharp (forward or reverse) it sounds like the tire is grabbing and hitting something, kinda loud. is this normal? anything i can do to stop it? thanks for any advise or suggestions..

Have someone turn the steering wheel while you watch the tire, check each side to see if it hitting. it also could be the steering stop. they are the bolts that contact the A frame .they limit the turn radius.try putting some greese on them.

[swampfox]....hello, neighbor.
31's fit fine on these rigs with no lift. In other words, if it is the tire rubbing, you have a different issue than lift. Of course, I can't think of anything that would be dangling down under the wheelwell for an otherwise normal setup, but make sure. Like swampfox said, also look at the steering stops.

im not sure if its the same for 1st gens, but it should just be the bump stops. You can get new rubber cap things and that should help. Also cover them in grease.

It's the same for 1st gen's. And, even 2nd gen pickups.
There are measurements. I forget the specs and those points at the moment (it's been a while), but run a search on stock ride height. IIRC, though, the measurement is taken from the top edge of the rim to the fender.
Of course, you could also just look for any lift components. Factory shackles (in the rear only on IFS) should be 3 1/2" in length. Any longer and they are modified. Look for lift blocks between the axle and leaf springs. It would be harder to determine if anyone's adjusted the torsion bars, but up front look for a diff bracket or ball joint spacers. Run another search if you are not familiar with those particulars.
