86 4runner fuel pump question?

is it possible to test the fuel pump on an 86 4runner with a 22re without removing the fuel tank entirely? I only ask because I read some apparently contradictary threads about this and before I remove the tank I thought I would ask you guy's. I replaced the fuel filter hoping that it was just stopped up, but alas that wasnt the problem.
when you turn on the ignition and stand beside the rear of the vehicle should you be able to hear the pump running?
I also read here somewhere that you could jump out the pump but I dont have any idea where to get started. I dont have a chiltons book or repair manual so I cant trace the wiring effeciently either.
sorry for the long thread but I am desperate to get this thing running again and this is the last piece of the puzzle.

Pump doesn't run with the key in, only when cranking (airflow).
