All is not well, the two rear exhaust bolts are stripped in the head. Anyone have an opinion of what to do? I heard a bit about Heli-coil.

 

If I take the exhaust manifold off will I have enough room to drill out what is left of the existing threads? Also what is better hand tapping or with a drill? I have the Heli-coils, when I went to Toyota to pick up my new OEM thermostat, I enquired about the Heli-coils and they had some extra and just gave them to me. Napa sells a kit for $40, but I think I can get away with doing it for less. I just need to get the right tap, 10Mx1.25. All help is appreciated, thank you.

 

I would say try to back it out 1st....

my neighbor did this for me when i snapped on on the thermostat housing but eneded up drilling it out...but i would say soak it with pb blaster 1st and try a tap, then drill.

i'd wait to see what others say too....

 

The bolt is all the way out, the threads in the aluminum head are stripped away.

Just installed the OEM T-stat, and on Monday I'm going to napa for a Heli-Coil kit. Want to make sure I have the right tools.

 

from Toyota?...how much for one of them? i wanna gets me one of them.

 

Didn't your machine shop fix any/all messed up threads in your head?

 

$15.30 plus tax, from a Toyota dealership part #90916-03078.

 

Apparently they didn't check them. I only knew when putting it back together, water under the bridge. Monday I hope to have the Heli-Coil kit and finish it.

They did have the 2-valve t-stat, part # 90916-03070. That was like $35-$37. Interesting how it has two valves. Has anyone used that one before and how is it going for you.

 

no big deal, seams like you know what to do on the heli coil route. Hope you get her runnin soon!

T-stat is in and works, now I just am looking to borrow a right angled cordless drill to do the heli-coil. The truck sounds great besides the exhaust leak.

 

Well this should have been checked before assembling the motor. But now that the motor is assembled, I have to become creative and tap out the head. I will be doing this on friday, thinking of rotating the engine to get a better look at it.

 

The 2 valved thermo thing....

Isn't it just an extra hole drilled to allow some movement and lesson pressure "just in case" ?

I thought there was a write up on these little holes somewhere on here?

Same thing or am I mixing lemon aid and milk again....
