854x4's 22RE Rebuild Thread

Well its been a long time coming my dads 1986 Toyota 4x4 finally gave up and blew the head gasket after 265,xxx so we decided to do a full rebuild on it. I tried to smog it with the blown head gasket because at first it only blew into the cylinder and hadnt hit the oil port yet so I was thinking maybe, but it failed, only by 40 points and only on HC's so when I went to retime it and try again I got hit with the double whammy the tps went (code 11) and the gasket finally blew into a oil port so now I had a milkshake. Anyway heres my plans for my rebuild. Engnbldr full kit with 268c degree camshaft , Pro Head, Exedy clutch and a few other goodies. Also my goal on this rebuild is to have NO machine work done what-so-ever its all going to be done by me in my garage, hopefully. Heres some pictures to get started.

The engine on the stand and the blown cylinder # 4 and by the way the bolts used to bolt the engine to the stand are M12 x 1.25mm x 75mm and are a pain to find. I ordered mine from mcmaster for less then twelve dollars after shipping.

Where's the rest of my timing guides? Oh there they are in the oil pan and pickup tube now I know why I had low oil pressure.

Heres the grade 8 bolts I bent when breaking the crank bolt loose. I used the chain around the frame trick. I already had the head and starter off before I realised I forgot to break the bolt loose. Also heres the clutch. Can you tell it had a seal leak.

Well my no machine work do it all myself theory was shot to hell today, I got the bottom end tore apart, honed and crosshatched the block then when I went to check the cylinder sizes I found that #1 is out of round and # 4 is just barley out of spec so I broke down and decided to put .020 over pistons in it. I will post pictures soon.

Ordered the kit from engnbldr today. Master engine kit ,268 cam .020 pistons, rings, std bearings, timing cover, and head bolts. Should be here next week.

Got the engnbldr kit and sent the block,crank,rods,and flywheel to the machine shop. Then yesterday i got a call saying that the crank needs to be turned 10 under and I need one rod reconditioned. Nothings ever cheap or easy when it comes to engines. I know alot of people have trouble with the pilot bearing in the crankshaft so heres a picture of the tool you need its called a blind hole bearing puller, you can pick it up at harbor freight.

I picked up some stuff for reassembly today permatex #1 for freeze plugs, copper spray for head and exhaust gaskets, a brand new exhaust manifold. I also picked up some assembly lube. I have never used this stuff before and I was wondering if anyone had any trouble with this brand its made by crc and says it has moly and graphite,I'll post a picture.

Got the engine back from the machine shop the bill was just under $400 I had the block hot tanked, bored 20 over, crank ground 10 under, piston pins fitted, flywheel surfaced, and one rod reconditioned.

I used GREASE to remove pilot bearing. Fill space behind bearing then take a dowl just smaller than the hole, and drive it in. The grease WILL push the bearing out, has now where else to go....Just got done with my 22RE EFI rebuild, it's basically an LCE stage 3/5 chromoly H-beam rods, stroker crank, 80 over forged pistons, the works. RUNS GREAT!!

Wanted to chime in here. I tried the grease thing and it made a mess and didn't work as well as advertised, I might have done it wrong. Anyway what I did was use wet newspaper. Tear it into about 4x4" pieces, wet it and use it the same way you would the grease (dowel and tapping and all that). It pushed the bearing out in a couple of minutes and there wasn't any greasy mess to deal with although trying to explain to the neighbor why I was feeding the rig the Albuquerque Journal was a little dicey.
