autos are great..until they start with problems..ugh-dont ask..lol, i am new to driving a stick with my 79 pickup (4spd), i love it driving around town but big hills suck when u gotta stop haha, i loved my auto in my 4runner, did everything with ease, i do the same obsticals now in my pickup and i end up riding the clutch or putting it in 4lo for less of the ":sniff, sniff:: humm clutch!" smell

 

Take care of the auto and it'll do just fine.

The problem I think with autos is that there are no real automatic transmission "mechanics" anymore. Everybody wants to keep the front of their shirt clean and call themselves a technician.

If your transmission mechanic is not top notch it can cost you a lot of money in parts. Plus he has to charge more because he is doing more comebacks. If the guy is real good and not just a parts replacer it shouldn't cost you any more to drive an automatic for 200,000 miles as it would a stick and possibly even quite a bit less over the life of the vehicle.
Just my opinion.

Mechanics fix things, technicians replace parts. Rarely when I fix an automatic does the parts bill exceed the labor bill, almost always when I repair a standard, the cost of gears and bearings is more than the labor.

I like my moms auto runner for driving when tired as hell or holding a beverage.

The stick is kinda a pain to drive in heavy traffic (under 15mph), but I'd take it over pretty much anything in terms of fun driving on road.

It keeps me paying attention to the road at all times and I feel like I have more control. Not to mention, it's a skill that most adults and teenagers don't posess anymore.

The few "extra" ponies is nice when racing an auto 4runner too ;-)

hey man Im sorry, somehow i miss read it, I do appologize.

 

The autos are VERY poorly matched to the motors on these trucks. I would avoid the auto at all costs. You'll need 5.71's with 33's and 35's are out of the question if you want to hold the overdrive on anything except downhill with a tailwind.

amen. this is very true. people can tell you all day one way or another, but it comes down to the fact that both are from TOYOTA which means they are reliable. its purely personal preference.

 

Buy the 5sp. I won't own an auto and a 3slow. But a 5spd and a 3slow works pretty good. Especially when you throw on a k&n airfilter setup and headers and open up the exhaust.
