4wd not engaging...

94 22re Manual with Manual hubs.

Was out wheeling in some nasty stuff last night and had to drop it into 4lo and lock my hubs to get over some rocks. Went to go up the hill and my bro-in-law asks if I'm in 4wd because only one rear tire is spinning. the day before I had to go rescue him in the snow and after locking my hubs then I had a wicked nasty noise (which I know is from my front differential has some serious play on the passenger side and is tearing my differential casing up, thus Im on a mission to find a new one)

So it also felt like the transfer case was not engaging properly, I always used to feel a thunk when I shifted into 4hi, but last night there was no "thunk" when I shifted. and the transfer case shifter felt like a wet noodle as it shifted around.

With that info any suggestions?

Update I got under and looked at stuff with it in 4wd and the transfer case is engaging it turns the driveshaft then if I unlock the hubs and undo the pull it out of 4wd the driveshaft won't turn. then even with just the hubs locked the driveshaft won't turn.

If Im not mistaking if the transfer case is in 2 and the hubs are locked when you drive your driveshaft should spin.
If the drive shaft isnt spining Id imagine your diff is busted.
or your hubs arent actually locking

And if its in 4 and your drive shaft is spinning your transfer case is probably working.

1. 92dlxman, sorry I get typing and my fingers don't keep up with my brain.

2. I did jack the pickup up the other day and check that the hubs are locking. I locked them and turned the wheels by hand to make sure they turned the cv axles.

3. I do think the transfer case is working because if I don't have the hubs locked and I put it in 4wd then the front drive shaft turns. If I take it out of 4wd it does not turn. The hubs are working from what I deduced with my earlier test. So I think the differential is toast because for the life of me the 4wd doesn't work.

1. only one tire spinning (slipping) per axle is normal for an open diff. (that's why we buy lockers) but in 4WD you should have had one wheel turning up front too.

2. it sounds like you've confirmed your t-case is working, because you've observed the front d-shaft engaged and disengaged.

3. it sounds like you've confirmed the hubs are locking and unlocking, because you've observed the axle shafts spin with each wheel.

4. seems you've got a bad front diff, since you said there's noise, and you said there's no front wheel turning in 4WD. could be broken pinion or ring.

the next test would be to lift the entire truck and put it in 4wd. all wheels should turn. or dump the gear oil from the front diff and see how much metal comes out.

get a new 3rd member for the front and shove it in there. replace the axle shafts if you want to take advantage of the disassembly. they're not too expensive.

I agree with this. However, if the ring and pinion are bad. Then when the hubs are locked, the drive shaft should not turn, unless he just stripped a few teeth and there is just a dead spot o the ring.

May have found a donor 4runner with 4:56 gears that I may be able to swap into the truck I will keep you all posted as to what I find when I change it out. I always hate when people have problems and never tell what fixed it.
