Finally finished installing the 22RE into a 1990 V6 4Runner I bought from a guy who threw a main bearing! I can't say I would do it again, but I only paid $400 for the new body and chasis and I had the 22RE/tranny from the 1990 I rolled about 6 months ago. Anyways, just wanted to finally post some pics of it!

Details , what did you have to do for the swap ?

 

I guess in hindsight it wasn't that bad, but at the time it seemed like I just kept finding new problems every time I tried to do something. Pulled the engine out of the old Runner, left the tranny and transfer case attached, let me tell you, thats fun.

I disconnected the wiring harness from the ECU and pulled that through the fire wall and left everything attached to the engine, definitely the easiest way. Then pulled the ECU and put that in the new Runner.

I had to cut the engine mounts out of the 4cyl Runner and weld them into the 6cyl Runner. The 6 cyl mounts are 3 inches farther back, about 2 inches wider, and sit at 45 degrees instead of the 55 degrees the 4cyl sit at. Believe me, I tried to avoid cutting them out, but it came down to that.

While I had the engine out, I put a new clutch in and a new timing chain and sprockets. Also put a new timing chain cover, oil pump, and water pump on. Got the kit from Engbldr, best $150 I've spent.

Finally put the engine in the new one, transferred the clutch master cylinder and pedal over, took the ehaust out of the old one and installed it, and fired it up!!!!! Man was it good to hear it crank up and see the oil pressure come up.

So that's the long part of the story.
