Alrighty, LOTS of good progress this weekend. I think I probably am going to get the black lung from welding and grinding. Seriously, blowing bloody snot (it's really just the dry air).

Pretty slick idea IMHO, we cut a slit in the "high" parts of the bed to keep from having to cut a crazy pattern to make it flush.



Top of the gate and the bulkhead sheet in the slit.

I was pretty pumped when we got the bed rails on...They're sturdy, and look good.



Put in some beefy supports for the bulkhead.



Fat, waterproof weld at the bottom. I don't think any of those chunky welds on the vertical pieces are gonna let go anytime soon.

Actually finished up all metal fabrication a couple of weekends back, just haven't gotten pics up yet.

Need to Bondo/JB Weld some cracks and cosmetic stuff, then primer, and bedline.

Bought my primer and Herculiner kit yesterday. You can bet I'll be preppin' the ever livin' out of it.

Especially since it snowed on and started a little surface rust, the dang thing sat for months with no rust and now I gotta wire wheel everywhere to get rid of it. Blah.

Also, thanks for all the positive comments on my previous posts. I'm glad it's turning out well. Kind of wish I had bobbed it though. I think later down the road I might just flat bed or truggy it.















Really need to get rid of the plastic "rock sliders" and get some real ones.

 

now i need to keep my eyes open for a 4runner with a blown moter so i can swap the 3.4 in and chop the back like yours... but i may graft in a window that will swing up to open otherwise... freaking nice!!! God bless this site and its awsome creative mechanicly inclined members with cameras that docoment the work for others to see and drool over.

 

Did some JB welding over the weekend, the stuff is really pretty easy to use and work with, and seems like it will hold up well. I bought way too much, all the work I did (there's a bunch inside) only took 1.5 tubes.

The respirator was worth every penny, I was cleaning paint with acetone and I didn't catch even a whiff of it. It'll be great when I'm bedlining.

 

my question is how are you gonna match the paint?

or are u just going to do an entirely new paint job?

 

I love it, its like a home made Hilux!

 

I'm gonna paint it dark, dark flat green.

 

And for all those haters who say this never gets wheeled....





Check out that flex. I also went to Bull Park last week. And took off the running boards. It looks MUCH better.

For all the Bondo haters, got plenty of flex/bottoming out going, nothing cracked, save one spot that I expected to crack. It was just there to provide some temporary sealing.

 

what did you do about drainage for the bed? so it doesnt fill up with rain water?
