Ooh, bad idea. I have had experience with this myself. I had (still have, but totaled) a 98 4runner. Upon replacing the rear diff with an E-locker, I was too drunk (oops) to count the teeth on the ring and pinion. I put a 4.30 in the back and still had a 4.10 in the front. For some reason, I kept breaking CV joints, only about 5 of them. It wasn't until I had to flat tow the 4Runner home, with the T-case neutral ( auto transmission), on night after a stick went through the radiator and auxilary transmission cooler that I figured out what I did wrong. Don't ask me why I didn't check the C/TR code on the door jam. Sheered every tooth off of the ring gear, killed every roller bearing in the driveline (Rear axles, front hubs, pinion, T-case output, all rear drive shaft U-joints, front diff output on the passenger side, front pinion seal, both front axles and the rear tires). Don't run different ratios!

i'm sure in an EMERGENCY situation where you DON'T have a lot of traction (like a mud hole), using 4wd with that combo would be ok for a very brief time period. spacejunk did it in his 4runner, but the other way around (4.88 rear + 4.56 front). a high traction situation (like rock crawling) would be BAD and things will definitely bind due to each axle moving at a different rate.
i'd put the 4.88s in and keep it all unlocked until you can find a 4.88 rear. lets face it, everyone will eventually want bigger tires
