try turning the distributor a little and see if you can see the mark. hold the light at various angles to try and see the mark

Sounds like the distributor is off a tooth. Common mistake

I had this same exact issue with my brand new, correctly installed distributor. I thought it was off a tooth and so I placed it back one, and then it was well above the 15 degree mark and the engine started pinging. I put the old one on which I had incorrectly diagnosed broken, and it fit just right in the range.

This doesn't mean it can't be off by a tooth. Regardless, since you're are down at 5 deg (mine reach the limit at 10) moving it back a tooth may give you the correct range.

Each tooth on the distributor is 27 degrees of timing. Just for reference

Thanks bone collector!!

UPDATE: I replaced the master cylinder and slave cylinder because my clutch was getting stuck to the floor. I noticed that fluid had leaked out of the master cylinder onto the carpet . Now this ones leaking, admittedly i did buy a master from Autozone lol whats the likelihood that its the part and something else isnt messing up with the clutch. Seems like a simple system so I dont know what the deal is...

I havent done much research on this yet so if its out there my bad.

If your still have trouble seeing your timing marks or they seem out side of the adjustment range I would recommend checking the crank pulley itself. The pulley has a rubber damper sandwiched between the inner metal portion and the outer belt portion. The rubber rots and the outer portion will move which means the timing marks move with it.
